A vehicle gateway is a combination of an onboard computer and a network router.

The onboard computer is responsible for the computation and processing of the data received from multiple sensors connected to the computer.

The gateway acts as a gatekeeper between the vehicle subsystem and the external internet and provides a secure internet connection to the vehicle.

The router does the high-speed networking, data management and protects information from security threats using multi-layer security.

In traditional vehicles, Telematic Control Unit or OBD serves the purpose of the gateway.

Current TCUs only support low-frequency data. With the increasing proliferation of new features, services, high bandwidth, and 5G applications, future vehicles will require the next generation of vehicle gateway design with high-speed, secure, reliable networking and better computational power.


Protocol Translation

Translating data and control information to/from incompatible networks to enable communications between them.

Data Routing

Routing of data on a path to reach its intended destination. It may be on different networks requiring protocol translation.

Diagnostic Routing

Routing of diagnostic messages between external diagnostic devices and ECUs which may involve translation between diagnostic protocols such as DoIP and UDS..


Filtering inbound and outbound network traffic based on rules, disallowing data transfers from unauthorized sources. Advanced firewalls may include context-aware filtering.

Message Mirroring

Capturing redundant  stream of data from multiple interfaces to transmit over another interface for diagnostics or data logging (storage).

Intrusion Detection

To protect the system from external attack system monitor network traffic for anomalies that may indicate intrusion.
